Tigernut milk, known as kunun aya in Nigeria, is a naturally sweet, dairy-free drink made from soaked and blended tigernuts — small, nutty tubers with a flavor somewhere between coconut and almond. Here it's blended with soft dates for extra sweetness and a spoonful of ground flaxseed for a smoothie that feels indulgent but is built from simple, whole ingredients.

Flaxseed is one of the most talked-about phytoestrogen-rich foods, and grinding it, rather than using whole seeds, helps the body access its fiber and plant compounds. Dates add potassium and natural sweetness without needing refined sugar, and tigernuts themselves bring a gentle dose of fiber and resistant starch.

Blend it up in the morning, or pour it over ice on a warm afternoon. If your blender struggles with whole tigernuts, tigernut flour or store-bought tigernut milk makes an easy substitute — just adjust the liquid to taste.
