Steaming keeps this meal about as gentle as cooking gets — fish and cabbage cook together over water rather than in oil, coming out tender without any browning or crisping to worry about.

Steamed preparations like this one are often easier to tolerate for people managing IBS or IBD, since they skip the fat and heavy seasoning that can be harder on a sensitive digestive system. A light seasoning of salt, pepper, and lemon juice is all the fish needs, and a drizzle of olive oil at the end adds just enough richness without overdoing it.

Ingredients

  • 2 fillets white fishwashed and cleaned
  • 2 cups cabbagechopped
  • 1 teaspoon olive oiloptional, for drizzling
  • 1/2 teaspoon saltto taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepperfreshly ground

  2. 2Place fish fillets on a plate, season with salt, black pepper, and lemon juice.
  3. 3Place chopped cabbage around or on top of the fish.
  4. 4Steam for 12–15 minutes until fish is cooked through and cabbage is tender.
  5. 5Drizzle with olive oil if desired and serve warm.
