Soft Morning Ogi with Banana and Cinnamon
A warm, smooth fermented cornmeal pap topped with ripe banana and cinnamon — a gentle start to the day.
Ogi (sometimes called pap or akamu) is a soft fermented cornmeal porridge that's long been a first food across West Africa, and it's about as gentle on the stomach as breakfast gets — no husks, no bran, just a smooth, warm bowl. Here it's kept plain and topped simply with ripe banana and a dusting of cinnamon.
Ripe banana is naturally easy to digest and low in the fermentable sugars that can bother a sensitive gut, which is why it pairs so well with a porridge like this. We left out citrus, heavy spice, and anything fried, so it stays soothing rather than stimulating, and the honey drizzle is entirely optional if you prefer it unsweetened.
It comes together in under 15 minutes and makes a calm, filling breakfast whether you're easing a sensitive stomach into the morning or just want something warm and simple.
Ingredients
Most ingredients here are everyday market staples across West Africa. A handful of specialty items may be easiest to find at a local open-air market or an African grocery store if you're elsewhere.
