Four Brazil nuts is really all you need here — they're one of the richest natural sources of selenium around, a mineral the thyroid relies on, which is why they show up so often in smoothies built with thyroid health in mind.
Banana gives the base its creaminess, blueberries add color and antioxidants, and a spoonful of chia seeds works in some fiber and omega-3s without changing the flavor much. It's a smoothie that tastes like dessert but is put together with a specific nutritional goal in mind — just don't be tempted to add extra Brazil nuts, since a little goes a long way with selenium.
Ingredients
- 4 Brazil nuts — raw, unsalted (about 120 mcg selenium)
- 1 ripe banana — sliced
- 1 cup unsweetened almond milk — or other plant-based milk
- 1/2 cup frozen blueberries — for antioxidants
- 1 teaspoon chia seeds — for fiber and omega-3s
- 1 teaspoon honey — optional, for sweetness
Instructions
- 1Peel and slice the banana.
- 2Place Brazil nuts, banana, almond milk, blueberries, and chia seeds into a blender.
- 3Blend on high speed until smooth and creamy.
- 4Taste and add honey if desired, blending briefly again.
- 5Pour into serving glasses and enjoy immediately.
